Earlier this week, we reported that Thanos—the big bad seen in the post-credits stinger of The Avengers—would be in both The Avengers 2 and Guardians of the Galaxy. But to what extent? And will the role be recast? Marvel Studios producer Kevin Feige recently spoke to MTV about the Mad Titan, and Marvel’s plan for him in their cinematic universe.
For those who don’t know, and for some reason cannot use Google or Wikipedia (yet somehow made it to this site…), Thanos is a Marvel character who was born on Saturn’s moon, Titan, and grows to be obsessed with nihilism and death. As such, in order to impress Death itself, he brings a nuclear holocaust his own people, killing millions. And those were just his early days. So, yeah, bad guy.
And, to bring those three of you who didn’t see The Avengers up to speed, in the first of two post-credits sequences in the film, Thanos is revealed, having learned of the Avengers’ resistance and success against an alien army.
So, what future does the Mad Titan have in the Marvel flick universe? Feige lets loose:
“Clearly, there’s a purpose to us putting him in the end of that movie.
We do have plans for him…I wouldn’t say we ever feel the need to rush anything one way or the other.
We succeeded in Phase One because we stuck to our guns and stuck to the plan.
That plan took place over many, many years and it ultimately paid off.
I see Phase Two unfolding in the same way of us taking our time, us doing what’s right for each individual movie, while folding in elements that will not only build up to the culmination of Phase Two, but even Phase Three.”
Feige also stated that Damion Poitier (who played Thanos in the post-credits scene), may not get to continue the role, as “I think we feel pretty free to recast.
That was cast for literally that one shot.
Depending on what the role requires from future movies, we’ll go from there.”
So there you have, kids. Thanos fans can certainly look forward to seeing Thanos in the relatively near future, but it may not pay off until a few sequels down the line.
What do you think of the Thanos news?
