A few days ago funny man Judd Apatow tweeted, “Let @jimmyfallon host the Oscars! Carson hosted the Oscars when they were not on NBC.
Kimmel can do it next year.” As exciting a notion as it might be to have NBC’s late night host go on to host the Academy Awards, that air on ABC, the idea is no longer being toyed with.
Jimmy Fallon has confirmed that he won’t be hosting the show this year.
Earlier today Fallon went on Today in London and told Matt Lauer that he will not be hosting the Academy Awards in 2013.
“No, I’m not going to do the Oscars.
It’s an honor to be asked by the academy, but it’s not my year.”
Fallon didn’t give reason as to why he won’t be taking on the grand event, but we can imagine it’s because his show doesn’t air on ABC.
Even though the network doesn’t have the official authority over who can or can’t host the show, they must take into account the $70 million ABC forks over to broadcast the Oscars each year.
In the past, Johnny Carson and David Letterman hosted the Oscars while appearing on different networks, but neither of their shows posed as a competitive threat.
Today, NBC’s Late Night with Jimmy Fallon directly competes with ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live!.
That’s too bad because Fallon could’ve added that youthful touch the Academy was looking for a few years back.
So now that Fallon isn’t hosting, who’ll take on the job? Jimmy Kimmel can’t host the thing because he’s already hosting the Emmy’s and his contract doesn’t allow him to host the Oscars.
Looks like we’re right back where we started.
Who do you think should host the Oscars?
