After the dead-on-arrival Taking Woodstock, Academy Award winning director Ang Lee had a lot of good will to win back and taking on the adaptation of Yann Martel's best-selling novel "Life of Pi" was as ambitious a project as one could hope for. 20th Century Fox has just released the first trailer, after a few images and some teaser footage dropped online, and what Lee, along with Benjamin Button's cinematographer Claudio Miranda, give us is brazenly dialogue-free, setting up the premise of a young man named Pi (Suraj Sharma) who finds himself shipwrecked on a vast expanse of water with a Bengal tiger named Richard Parker, and letting the magical, harrowing images do the talking.
Martel's 2001 story tells of Pi's almost year-long journey on a life boat and explores notions of religion, friendship and survival and Lee's strategy for pulling off the fanciful imagery seems to be going for broke and upping the wow factor, making Pi's surroundings look like a painting come to life.
