The film’s not even out yet, but already screenwriter and producer Reid Carolin has announced Magic Mike, Steven Soderbergh‘s male stripper pic based on the real-life experiences of star Channing Tatum, is on its way for a Broadway run. Even further: some of the movie’s cast may even get involved in the stage adaptation.

If Broadway plans for Magic Mike do indeed go ahead, the flick will be following the modern flick formula of success – after all, these days, it’s no longer enough for a flick to just succeed by itself on the big screen.
In the past, studios have paved the way for flick spin-offs, theme park attractions, board games, or stage adaptations – if there’s an opportunity, someone, somewhere, will find a way.
USA Today talked to Carolin at the Los Angeles red carpet premiere of the film, where they heard it first hand; “We are working on it as a Broadway show, which would be a different story,” he revealed.
And that’s not all – Adam Rodriguez, who co-stars in the movie, confirmed the Broadway idea had actually been on the cards for a while.
“We’ve been talking about that since we filmed this movie,” he said. According to Carolin, the stage version of Magic Mike wouldn’t be a direct adaptation of Soderbergh’s picture, but “more of a romp, more of a fun night out at a club with a story.” And it seems he’s planning on a fun night out for women in particular: “I’m almost more excited about that than the flick because I think it’s the perfect thing for women to go see on Broadway, to be participants in the show,” he said. It’s actually quite easy to picture it happening already.
But who might star in the theater adaptation? Well, believe it or not, some of the film’s cast have already expressed an interest in the Broadway show – although it does seem unlikely that the flick cast will trade in their screen careers for the stage any time soon.
Alex Pettyfer asserted that he was “absolutely” on board for the Broadway show, adding “I think we should all do the opening night.” Tatum, meanwhile, agreed that he’d “love to do Broadway,” although he confessed to knowing nothing about stage musicals.
The star was accused of stealing stripper moves for the movie.
If Magic Mike makes it to Broadway, it’ll be following in the footsteps of several musicals based on movies.
Currently we have Newsies, Once, Sister Act, Ghost, Mary Poppins and The Lion King – and that’s not even mentioning the stage shows which have been made into films, such as Chicago, Rock of Ages, and Evita.
